Practicing Part Nine
Practice Rooms
As a musician, you aren’t always going to have the luxury of practicing in the privacy of your home. So let’s talk about:
Practice Rooms:
A place that is dedicated for your independent practice time.
Your everyday practice room comes equip with:
Sound proof walls
Piano/Keyboard
Music stand
Chair/Piano Stool
Okay, let’s face it - It’s basically the size of a closet and you are lucky if you get a window.
Regardless~ It is an alternative space for you to work independently on your music without any distractions from:
Music Schools and or Music Departments typically have a limited amount of practice rooms available for their students to use. Depending on the school/department, they are available seven days a week and sometimes, they are available to use 24 hours. (When I went to Peabody, I loved practicing late at night!)
There are some practice spaces that are designated for specific instruments and/voice. They typically have different sound proofing and or acoustics.
(I used to love kicking an instrumentalist out of the Voice Priority Room)
Not in school right now?! That’s okay!
Practice rooms are also available to rent - particularly in major cities like Manhattan.
Whenever you rent a practice room:
You sign a leasing/rental agreement stating you will respect the property etc…
Pay anywhere from $15-38 for an hour
You can only use that space for the time you rented out
10AM-11AM - You start right at 10AM and at 10:59AM grab all your belongings and get out of there because someone else is waiting for their paid time.
If you are late - too bad! Some places may be able to move your scheduled time, but don’t assume they will.
Punctuality is essential in music!
Remember: Practice Makes Progress.
Happy Practicing!
